The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for securing prisoner Transports within and outside of Carbon County. All inmates are secured with shackles, handcuffs and a belly chain which is padlocked, or a tamper-proof box is utilized.
Anytime an individual in the Carbon County Correctional Facility has a court appearance the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office conducts the transport. At times this can be up to a dozen inmates a day, several days a week.
Anytime an individual with an outstanding Carbon County warrant is apprehended outside of Carbon County and the warrant extradition parameters authorize a return to Carbon County, the Correctional Facility in that county will house that individual until secure transport back to the Carbon County Correctional Facility can be arranged. The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office frequently transports individuals from neighboring counties on a daily basis. In addition, many inmates need to be transported to and from State Correctional Facilities across the Commonwealth. The Sheriff’s Office conducts all of these transports as well.
On occasion, individuals flee the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and are apprehended in other states. If the warrant extradition parameters authorize that they are returned, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office will travel out of state to bring the individual back to the Carbon County Correctional Facility. In 2022 the Sheriff’s Office conducted out-of-state transports from Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Florida. It is our belief and that of the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office that all efforts will be made to bring to justice any individual charged with a crime in Carbon County or flees or attempts to avoid prosecution for their crimes.
In 2022 over 680 inmates were transported over 31,000 miles.
