On 12/29/22 the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office experienced a first. It was determined that due to rising costs for prisoner transport extraditions from out of state the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office would do the extradition internally. This task required a great deal of coordination and planning with the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office, Berks County Sheriff’s Office, Polk County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, and the Lehigh Valley International Airport Police Department. The requirements for deputies to fly while armed are extensive and pose a risk; however the three deputies assigned to this task performed exceptionally and managed to transport two felons from Florida back to Pennsylvania to answer for their crimes. Their teamwork, organization, and ability to independently solve problems contributed to the success of this operation.
Due to their efforts Sgt. Mitch Kramer, Deputy Ian Achberger, and Deputy Nicole Thalmann are being awarded this Letter of Commendation to be placed in their personnel jacket as well as the Letter of Commendation citation bars.
On December 5, 2022, while on duty and in full uniform and assigned to serve the Civil process,
Deputy Allen STROHL witnessed a head on motor vehicle accident. After Deputy STROHL called the accident into the 911 Center to request assistance he then assessed the scene and observed several individuals who were involved in the accident trapped in their vehicles. Once he ensured the scene was safe Deputy STROHL then extricated two of these individuals from their vehicles and provided medical care until additional first responders arrived on scene. Once the other agencies arrived on scene Deputy STROHL assisted them in extricating another injured party.
Because of his efforts, which demonstrated courage, gallantry and poise, Deputy STROHL is being issued the Award of Merit.
On July 4, 2022 Deputies Kendall Juracka and Ian Achberger were assigned to work at Mauch
Chunk Lake Park from 0900 – 1800 hrs to assist with traffic control and lake patrol. While performingthese duties Deputies Juracka and Achberger heard a radio transmission that there was an active drowning in the lake. Deputies Juracka and Achberger immediately activated their lights and sirens and proceeded to the beach area of the lake. Once they arrived they assessed the situation and along with Park Rangers, deputies took charge and advised members of the public to form a line and begin searching the water for the missing swimmer. Deputies Juracka and Achberger then removed their gear and entered the water to search for the missing swimmer. After a short time the swimmer was located and Deputies Juracka and Achberger pulled the swimmer from the water. Once the swimmer was on the beach both deputies assisted Jim Thorpe Police and Paramedics with life saving measures. Ultimately the swimmer succumbed to his injuries; however the efforts of both deputies to locate and
remove the swimmer allowed emergency care to be provided.
It should be noted that both deputies accepted an overtime assignment on this date and time in a location that they were unfamiliar with. Mauch Chunk Rangers and Life Guards were the primary response for incidents such as this; however both deputies still accepted the call to action and assisted. Deputies Juracka and Achberger displayed poise and control in a stressful situation as well as gallantry in their efforts to save a life. Deputies Juracka and Achberger represent the very best that the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office has to offer and are an excellent example of the efforts first responders exhibit throughout the County and Country on a daily basis.
Because of their efforts both Deputies Juracka and Achberger are being issued the Award of Merit.
Today we show appreciation for your efforts, but every day I feel thankful, grateful and appreciative to lead a team of individuals such as yourselves. Your selflessness and commitment to the oath you took to protect and serve sets a standard for others to achieve.
